Letters and Notes on the Manners, Customs, and Conditions of North American Indians, Vol 2
George CatlinVolume II; in the previous volume, in the company of William Clark (of Lewis and Clark fame), George Catlin recorded and painted the tribes of the Upper Missouri, particularly the Mandans.
Volume II finds Catlin in escort with the military luminaries Col. Richard Dodge and General Henry Leavenworth, as he sweeps across much of the US territories. Volume II has Catlin painting and documenting from Florida to the Great Lakes; from the Pacific Northwest to Texas; Cherokee to Comanche; Pawnee to Chinook with much more in between.
Further, Catlin managed to locate and visit the forbidden and mystical Red Pipe Stone Quarry of Coteau des Prairies, the sacred source of the rare red stone used solely for pipe construction by virtually all the great plains tribes.
As in the previous volume, Catlin is an unparalleled window to catch the view of a fast vanishing lifestyle and culture.
