There is a lot of engineering design that goes into the distribution of electricity. Most of us just take for granted the high voltage power lines that deliver electricity to our suburbs. This book shows many of the issues involved in making power generally available. One chapter talks about overhead lines. Factors like finding the permissible thermal load, and the mechanical design of the overhead line towers, are discussed. Ambient air temperature affects the thermal load and how much heat can be dissipated by radiation and convection. Wind speeds also can affect dissipation. The sag and tension of the lines between towers needs to be determined. Other chapters explain many other issues. The book assumes an undergraduate background in classical physics. So that ideas like black body radiation and circuit diagrams should already be familiar to you.
