Description

The Souls of Black Folk by W. E. B. Du Bois was first published in 1903. An influential work in the history of sociology, the book consists of fourteen essays that explore the experiences and struggles of African Americans in the United States at the turn of the 20th century. Du Bois begins by discussing the concept of double consciousness, which refers to the psychological tension experienced by African Americans due to their dual identities as both Black and American. He argues that this dual consciousness often leads to a sense of alienation and an internal conflict between one's true self and the external perception imposed by society. The book also addresses the legacy of slavery and its lasting impact on Black communities. Du Bois criticizes the prevailing social and economic inequalities faced by African Americans, highlighting the systemic barriers that hinder their progress and limit their opportunities for advancement.
